You do not have to use shift, if you hold down the 'm' key for a longer time it will insert its alt key, a question mark.

+1 In fact anything on the top of any of the keys can be entered by long-pressing on the key for about half a second. If you long-press for even longer (around a second) you get a mini-menu popup with even more options for that key.

It wasn't until I got Swype that I realized the same thing (holding the key down) works for the standard Android keyboard too.

Long-press works but unfortunately leads to the same problem from using shift: it takes longer time than just swiping.
